Common Roof Leak Repairs

There are a few common areas in the home where roof leak repairs may need to be done regularly. Being able to identify where the leak is coming from is more than half the battle and it can help you to get through with the leak repair as quickly as possible. The same is also true if you are repairing an RV roof, although this tends to be a little bit easier of a job in many cases. Here are some of the more common types of leaks that may occur and how roof leak repairs can easily be done.

One of the most common areas where home roof repair is necessary is going to be in the field of tiles. The unfortunate thing about this is the place where the leak is evident on the inside of the home may not be the same place where it is actually coming from on the outside of the home. It may be necessary for you to get up on the roof and to look around for quite some time for any obvious damage that is occurring within the field. For example, a shingle roof may have cracked shingles or perhaps a nail that has backed out. Tile roofs may be cracked or broken, which would be an obvious sign of a leak problem. Just be cautious not to damage the roof any further while you're walking around on it.

If you have any additional flashing that is on the roof, such as against the chimney or a vent, this is also a common place for it to leak. If you suspect that the flashing may be the culprit, carefully inspect it in order to look for any cracks that may exist. These may especially show up in the corners where any soldering has broken loose. Keep in mind, even a small crack in the flashing can let an enormous amount of water flow underneath it.

If you live in a cold area where it snows regularly, you may also have a problem with ice dam from time to time. This is where the ice and snow build up to the point that whenever a melt occurs, it simply backs the water up and underneath the shingles. The unfortunate thing about an ice dam is that there is not much that you can do about it once it occurs. You can remove the ice, but it is a much better idea for you to have a membrane under the roofing which will stop the leak from occurring. This may be beyond the abilities for most DIY homeowners.

One of the most important things for you to think about whenever you're doing roof leak repairs is to take your time and to really identify where the leak is coming from in the first place. This is not only true of your home roof; it is also true whenever you're doing the repairs on an RV. Identifying the leak gives you a starting point as to where you will begin the repair job.
